Water Features

The natural world is a great source of inspiration for me, my observations of natural forms, combined with creative use of geometry, lie at the heart of these sculptures. Although brought up with flatness of the prairie, I spent a lot of time in the rugged country hundreds of miles away from my home in Winnipeg, and was constantly fascinated by the water that abounded throughout the area. I captured in my imagination and on film the local ponds and pools, reflections in still water and on its rippled surfaces, I dammed streams to make cascades and recorded the way water reacted to this intervention. On my travels I would photograph water: a particular gorge, a still deep pool on a mountaintop, or water flowing down a mountainside. I use these references constantly: since the first of the natural stone sculptures, and from the 1990s when I was introduced to concrete as a major sculptural element in my water sculpture work.

pond

The entertainment pavilion is a landscaped extension of the main house, creating an outdoor area that it extends over two lots. The pond was created as a main feature to the new landscaped environment.

pond

With 3 ponds, 200, 1200, and 2,500 gallons. A natural Rock Waterfall, and a cascading weir.
The first fall built from 8 ton rocks drops approximately 2.2 meters into the upper pool. From here the water cascades through a small trickling weir 1.5 to 2 meters long with a drop of about 1 meter, to the lower pond, with an auto leveling device to make up water loss. This pond uses the upper rock edge as the skimmer for surface debris and natural over flow. The area immediate to the out flow point is well draining coarse stone which carries the overflow water underground through to a cliff away from the main property.

There are four main suction drains two for circulation and two for additional water flow to the falls. The feature is continuously operated through a sand filter at an ambient level, with water flowing from the filter back into the upper pond below the surface providing a subtle backdrop to the natural setting.
Remote electronic control allows for three more settings to give a more dramatic level of excitement to this waterfeature.

Langley Horse Ranch

A koi fish habitat

This water feature is on a horse farm in rural Langley. It is two levels with a small waterfall between them. The drop between the ponds is about four feet. A concrete bridge that has been stamped and acid stained to look like cobblestones crosses over the drop. It's edges are hand sculpted and raised to form a border. There is also a small waterfall into the top pond as the water source.

The lower pond is retained at the front by an existing retaining wall and reinforced with an inner pond wall of steel and sculpted concrete. Planting and fish are in place. This feature uses external pool pumps and a sand filter. The water also passes an ultraviolet light to help maintain water quality for fish.
