Whistler North

Project on Whistler Trail Network, North of Village North

This project was started in late summer early fall of 2000.
As winter came during the construction of this project.
It was put on hold until the weather changed to allow work to commence.

The weather changed, ski season was over and the project got back under construction. The remaining steel was tied and the structure readied for concrete. It was completed around mid June 2001.

The wall is about 34 meters long by 3.5 meters high. It is structural with a 20 cm thickness of structural gunite, over an armature of 20 and 25 mil re-bar steel.
On top of the structural component there is a 4 to 6 inch covering of sculpted gunite, which was stained with acid stains and sealed with a concrete sealer.

As the wall ages it will take on a natural patina and attract moses and other plants.

The wall was constructed to provide the lot with a level building area.
The lot was heavily sloped to at one side and was originally retained with a stacked rock wall.

The structure takes shape with a heavy re-bar and diamond lathe armature in preparation for sculpting concrete.

Early on in the project. Gunite process underway. The heavy structure is anchored in a base of concrete averaging .5 meters thick and about 1.7 meters wide. A structural mix is being applied to stiffen the armature. A finer more plastic mix will be applied in a few days for sculpting.

This overhang is just to push the limits. It's hard to sculpt upside down with a materiial that enjoys taking advantage of gravity.

More of the retaining wall takes shape.

The wall gets some color.
