Formwork and Concrete

Concrete is the second most widely consumed substance on earth, after water. It is ubiquitous, and easily taken for granted.
It is a favored material of many talented architects and engineers who favor its versatility, strength, and limitless potential for imaginative forms and surfaces. Concrete is a chameleon. Without concrete, some of the most beautiful and innovative works of contemporary architecture in the world, would be inconceivable.

It is most often gray, but can just as easily be made any variety of color through the selection of cement, aggregate or special color agents.
It can be plain or elaborately patterned, as smooth as glass or as rough as weathered rock, the finish is not only limited by the formwork used to mold it. It may also be sculpted, as gunite sprayed over an armature, to the desired shape and surface texture.
Concrete is a product that covers a broad spectrum of materials, with countless possibilities for texture, color and architectural expression.

These sculpted concrete landscape stairs lead you up from the house through the back patio, to the back play yard. The stairs join in to a sculpted retaining wall which leads to one of two waterfalls.

Here the project is in view. The upper deck has a large barbecue and washing area with fridge. There is also a gas fired fire pit and an outdoor pool table. A set of sculpted stairs bring you down to a bridge that hangs out over the water and takes you to the lower level and the boat launch.
